Breast Diseases and Cancers
We offer comprehensive breast services including screening physical exams, referral for mammography, ultrasound, and MRI if indicated and image guided biopsies. Majority of breast problems do not require surgery. Some benign and almost all malignant conditions of the breast require surgical removal. Most frequently this is done as a lumpectomy in which the tumor and a surrounding rim of normal breast tissue are removed. Occasionally a mastectomy (removal of the whole breast) is required. We work with experienced plastic surgeons and will arrange for reconstruction
counseling before surgery.
In case of cancer, evaluation of axillary lymph nodes (lymph node at arm pit) is recommended. This will be done with sentinel Lymph node biopsy procedure. In this procedure one or more lymph nodes that are the first to drain the lymph from breast are detected and removed. Rarely removal of almost all Lymph nodes in the arm pit (axillary lymph node dissection) is required.
We also arrange for genetic testing by experienced genetic counselor in high risk patients. A prophylactic nipple sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction can be performed in women with very high risk of acquiring breast cancer especially BRCA 1 or 2 mutations to significantly reduce the risk of future breast cancers.
